Sir Eddie Kulukundis, who has died aged 88, was a scion of five generations of Greek shipping brokers and used his inheritance to become a noted theatrical impresario and generous patron of the arts and sport, giving away millions of pounds – in lump sums, allowances and thoughtful gifts – to hundreds of young hopefuls….(Daily Telegraph)

Eddie Kulukundis inherited a large shipping fortune and spent a long and happy lifetime turning it into a small one, which he also managed to give away. A bearded and shambling figure with shirt tails out and heart on sleeve, he had a personality as big as his frame. “My luck,” he said, “is that my parents were very wealthy.” …(Times)

Kulukundis married the English actress Susan Hampshire in 1981. The couple lived quietly on the outskirts of Bedford, England. Active on stage and screen until her early seventies, Hampshire gave up almost all acting opportunities after 2009 to care for her husband, who had developed dementia and type 2 diabetes.[13] Kulukundis died at his home on 17 February 2021, aged 88.
